There are plenty of reasons your electric car might sit unused for a while — maybe you’re heading out on an extended trip, working from home, or simply driving less during the winter. While EVs generally require less maintenance than gas-powered cars, they still benefit from a little preparation before a long break. Here’s how to make sure your car stays in great shape while it’s parked.

The Battery – Your EV’s Heart

The battery is the most important part of your electric car, and it needs special attention when the vehicle isn’t being driven. Lithium-ion batteries prefer to stay somewhere in the middle of their charge range.

  • Keep the charge between 40% and 60% if the car will sit for more than a couple of weeks. This helps reduce stress on the battery cells and prolongs their lifespan.
  • Avoid leaving the car plugged in all the time. Most EVs let you set a maximum charge level — use that feature to prevent overcharging.
  • Check the 12-volt battery. Even though your EV’s main battery is large, the smaller 12V battery powers essential systems like locks and alarms. It can slowly discharge, so consider connecting a maintenance charger if the car will be idle for several months.

Location and Climate

Where and how you store your EV can make a big difference in how well it weathers the downtime.

  • Park in a cool, dry place. Direct sunlight and high heat can degrade both the battery and the interior. A garage or carport is ideal.
  • Avoid damp conditions. Moisture can cause condensation inside the cabin and on electrical components. If you must park outdoors, use a breathable car cover to protect against rain, snow, and debris.
  • Maintain proper tire pressure. Tires can develop flat spots if they sit too long with low pressure. Inflate them slightly above the recommended level if the car will be parked for an extended period.

Software and Systems

Modern EVs are as much computers as they are cars, so software management matters even when the vehicle isn’t moving.

  • Update the software before parking. Make sure your car has the latest updates to minimize energy use and fix any known issues.
  • Turn off unnecessary features. Some EVs keep cameras, remote access, or climate control systems active even when parked. Disable these temporarily to conserve energy.
  • Use your app to monitor the car. Most EVs let you check battery status and temperature remotely — a convenient way to keep tabs on your vehicle during its break.

Cabin and Interior Care

Even though EVs don’t have engine oil or exhaust systems, the interior can still suffer from long periods of inactivity.

  • Clean the car thoroughly. Remove food, trash, and anything that could attract pests or cause odors.
  • Crack the windows slightly if the car is stored in a secure garage to reduce humidity and prevent mold.
  • Lubricate rubber seals around doors and windows with silicone to keep them from drying out or sticking.
  • Consider a moisture absorber inside the cabin if you live in a humid area or plan to store the car for several months.

When It’s Time to Drive Again

When you’re ready to get back on the road, take a few minutes to make sure everything is in order.

  • Check tire pressure and brakes. Brakes can seize slightly after long periods of inactivity, and tires may need reinflation.
  • Inspect the battery level. If the main battery is low, charge it slowly — avoid fast charging the first time after storage.
  • Look for software updates that may have been released while the car was parked.

After a short drive, your EV should be back to normal operation.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Preparing your electric car for a long break doesn’t take much effort, but it can save you time, money, and frustration later. Keeping the battery at the right charge, storing the car in a suitable environment, and paying attention to tires and electronics will ensure your EV is ready to roll smoothly when you are. With a bit of care, your electric car can rest easy — and be ready to hit the road again without a hitch.
